From Budapest to Rome, the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica continue their collaboration with some of the world’s most prestigious museums, offering visitors a unique opportunity to encounter one of the greatest masters of European painting.

Painted around 1663–1664, Woman in Blue Reading a Letter is among Vermeer’s most celebrated works and one of the masterpieces of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. The scene depicts a young woman absorbed in reading a letter within the quiet intimacy of a domestic interior, illuminated by light entering through a window. In this iconic image, Vermeer achieves a perfect balance between the observation of reality, emotional intensity and formal refinement.

The motif of the letter, a recurring theme in Vermeer’s oeuvre, evokes relationships, expectations and emotions that remain deliberately undefined, leaving room for the viewer’s imagination. Through an essential composition and an extraordinary command of light, the artist transforms an everyday moment into a scene of profound psychological depth.

Curated by Thomas Clement Salomon and Paola Nicita, the project offers a rare opportunity to explore the work of an artist whose known oeuvre comprises little more than thirty authenticated paintings, none of which is held in an Italian collection. The rarity with which Vermeer’s works are loaned makes this presentation an event of exceptional significance.

The exhibition unfolds between the Sala Ovale and the Sala Paesaggi. Dedicated digital content will guide visitors through Vermeer’s artistic practice, the history of the painting, and the cultural context of seventeenth-century Delft.

Special attention will be devoted to the restoration carried out by the Rijksmuseum in 2010, which restored the painting’s original luminosity and provided new insights into Vermeer’s creative process. The removal of aged varnishes revealed the remarkable intensity of the blues and brought to light important details of execution, offering new perspectives on one of the most beloved masterpieces of European painting.

The exhibition concludes in the Sala Paesaggi, where Woman in Blue Reading a Letter will be displayed in a dedicated space designed to encourage close viewing and appreciation of the painting’s extraordinary technical and artistic qualities.

The exhibition reaffirms the commitment of the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica to making outstanding works from major international collections accessible to the public, fostering new opportunities for discovery, knowledge and engagement with art.

From 8 July to 11 October 2026, Palazzo Barberini will host Woman in Blue Reading a Letter, Johannes Vermeer’s extraordinary masterpiece, exceptionally loaned by the …

[14
100

post-5261","evento","type-evento","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","location-palazzo-barberini","event-categories-exhibition
":null
["GET
