The portrait unveiled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<strong>Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica<\/strong>\u00a0host an\u00a0<strong>extraordinary event from November 23, 2024 to February 23, 2025 <\/strong>curated by\u00a0<strong>Thomas Clement Salomon\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Paola Nicita<\/strong>: the <em>Portrait of Monsignor Maffeo Barberini<\/em>, a painting by\u00a0<strong>Caravaggio<\/strong>\u00a0from a private collection that has never previously been on display to the public, will be exhibited in the Sala Paesaggi of\u00a0<strong>Palazzo Barberini<\/strong>. This is a\u00a0<strong>historical loan of the utmost value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The work, first presented by\u00a0<strong>Roberto Longhi<\/strong>\u00a0in his article\u00a0<em>Il vero \u2018Maffeo Barberini\u2019 di Caravaggio<\/em>\u00a0published in 1963 in the journal\u00a0<em>Paragone<\/em>, was referred to by this leading scholar as a fundamental key to understanding Caravaggio&#8217;s portrait painting.<\/p>\n<p>According to Longhi, the painting, which reappeared in Rome without any accompanying documentation, had been kept for centuries in the Barberini family collection before ending up in a private collection, probably when the estate was dispersed in the 1930s. Leading scholars of Caravaggio and 17th century painting all agree the work is his.<\/p>\n<p>This exceptional loan offers a\u00a0<strong>unique opportunity\u00a0<\/strong>for the public and experts to admire a\u00a0<strong>work that has never previously been exhibited<\/strong>\u00a0and is still part of the private collection it has belonged to for decades.
